A coherent set of policies, perceived as more beneficial, effective and relevant than those of other parties. That's what LibDems need.
Yes, there's more to voting than policy, there's more to voters than rationality. But we must stand for something, be distinctive, be recognisable. We need to conjure an image in the mind.
Where Labour and Conservatives divide and demonise, I seek to pull people together.
To look at the fundamental interests that unite us.
In today's UK I see those fundamentals in the economy, environment, constitution, community and quality of public debate.
Advance those, and you advance everyone.
Difference, identity, sub-cultures, sectors, those come in next, to ensure equitable access and targeted messaging. But to start from difference, as our political opponents do, is inherently socially disintegrative.

A few examples of my policies:
- Rejoin the EU, building policies to share the benefits more widely and address Leaver concerns more constructively
- Regional economic development bodies with an elected Chair and the power to do whatever's needed to advance their local economy
- Citizens' panels on legislation
- Elected seats in the House of Lords (I briefed MPs on options when I worked in the Commons Library)
- Federalism - bringing devolution to London and other English regions (and allowing for "double devolution" to meet concerns in the Scottish Highlands & Islands)
- Greening the Built Environment - using regulatory powers to require developers to include e-vehicle charging points, renewable energy and green building materials in new-builds; requiring fuel stations and public car parks to provide e-vehicle charging points; cladding public buildings with algae curtains to absorb CO2
