I work at the London Assembly for your LibDem Group, Caroline Pidgeon and Hina Bokhari. You can see me in the photo with my colleague in the office, Cllr Tim Verboven, who will be well-known to any candidates from last year's local elections for his London-wide development role.
In March I was asked to design a motion for the monthly plenary session, on clean air. I knew of the tragic case of two-year old Awaab Ishak, who died in a housing association flat from exposure to mould. I researched and wrote a motion that called for a Mayoral Gold Standard on Damp and Mould in Social Housing. I got the Greens onside, and wrote Hina's speech. The motion passed unanimously. Much like a kite-mark, or IIP accreditation, the Gold Standard will advertise the landlord's high standards. If we leave it to enforcement, we accept the idea of victims. I want to do better than that, for the most vulnerable, so that no child born in the wrong place suffers the desperate plight of little Awaab.
You can read about my skilful management of our Budget Amendments on my CV page.
I've also written letters in Caroline's name on Oceandiva (a huge party boat for the Thames that's seeking a license and which we strongly oppose), London City Airport's proposed extension of hours, BBC local radio cuts, and the Arts Council forcing English National Opera to leave London.
I've accompanied Hina to a meeting with the Board of Deputies of British Jews, to start a process of rebuilding our relations with the Jewish community. I followed up with a number of probing Mayor's Questions, and have explored the training they provide in inter-communal relations. I also connected with our local Deputy in Southwark over an anti-Semitic attack at my local tube station, passing information to the Community Security Trust on his advice.
Another community meeting was with the Osmani Trust, a Muslim-run youth service in Tower Hamlets that has an impressive record on turning around young people at risk. It could provide a model for community intervention elsewhere.
