In my local area a hot topic is Labour's unnecessary and insensitive over-development of the area around our shopping centre, known as the Canada Water Masterplan. I've built a strong relationship with the TRA that backs onto the first phase of works in the Masterplan.
"Your engagement with Hothfield Place TRA/residents was greatly appreciated", Alan Murphy, Hothfield Place TRA Chair
Guess what? Over the road, there's Maydew House, a Council block. Labour left it empty for 7 years, spent £15m failing to do it up, and are now knocking it down. The promised return for decanted residents will never happen. Here in the Masterplan, they're building a 30+ storey development. It's just gone on sale in Hong Kong, at £1.4m a flat. How will that help overcrowded families on Council estates?
Residents are plagued by dust - a lady took me into her house in last year's heatwave. She can't open the windows because of her asthma, since the builders won't use dust-sheets. The workmen's gangway overlooked her bedroom window - I saw the men leaning there on a break, looking straight in. And the lorries turn up at all hours, idling their engines. Residents are furious that Labour Councillors fail to engage. A couple of streets away I tried to canvass on a Bank Holiday. I couldn't see the resident on her doorstep because of the dust drifting between us from ongoing works. Residents here can't do homeworking - meetings with clients are impossible because of the bellowing noise.
My support for these residents has been rewarded - the TRA and others now retweet my own LibDem messages, amplifying our reach and credibility. That's the sort of community engagement I'll build across across this constituency if you give me your first preference vote.
